(CHATHAM, N.Y.) – Banjo legend Tony Trischka will headline an evening of progressive acoustic music along with fiddler Darol Anger and guitarist Michael Daves at PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century on Saturday, June 29, 2013, at 7:30 pm.

Trischka’s avant-garde banjo stylings have inspired a generation of progressive bluegrass musicians as well as earning him a Grammy nomination and the honor of being named International Bluegrass Music Association Banjo Player of the Year. Considered among the very best pickers, he is also one of the instrument’s top teachers, having created numerous instructional books, teaching video tapes, and cassettes.

Trischka grew up in Syracuse and was inspired to play the banjo in 1963 whilst listening to the Kingston Trio’s folk classic “Charlie and the MTA.” Over the course of his 35-year career, he has played with many bands, including Down City Ramblers, Country Cooking, and Breakfast Special, before forming his own band, Skyline, in the early 1980s.

Trischka has since performed and recorded with many accomplished musicians; Steve Martin, Doc Watson, the Boston Pops, and many others. His recording Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular received IBMA awards for Recorded Event of the Year, Instrumental Album of the Year and a Grammy nomination.

Darol Anger is a fiddle guru who spent three decades reinventing American string music to encompass his explorations of bluegrass, jazz, and music from around the world. He co-founded the David Grisman Quintet, the Turtle Island String Quartet, Psychograss, Montreux, and the Republic of Strings ensemble. Michael Daves, who is of a younger generation of bluegrass musicians, plays regularly with Tony Trischka in addition to his own solo and duo work.

Tickets for the Tony Trischka Territory Concert can be purchased at PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century, by calling 1-800-838-3006, or at the door until the show sells out. $30/$25 members/$18 students.

This concert is the final performance in PS21’s “String Concert Series,” which featured three exceptionally accomplished string players from diverse musical and cultural traditions.  On June 15, Eugene Drucker, violin, and Marija Stroke, piano, performed an evening of Bach. On Saturday, June 22, Zal Idrissa Sissokho and Buntalo performed an evening of West African kora music. This project has been supported by a grant from the Fund for Columbia County, a fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.

PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century is a not-for-profit organization in Chatham, NY, dedicated to the performing arts and to serving a diverse community with concerts, programs and residencies by professional artists and ensembles, youth and children’s programming and cultural education opportunities for all ages.
