MASS MoCA to Screen ‘Airplane!’ at Airport

Airplane movie poster(NORTH ADAMS, Mass.) – MASS MoCA screens Airplane!, one of the most iconic comedies in American movie history, at Harriman-West Airport in North Adams on Saturday, August 24, 2013, at 8pm. Already boasting the largest movie screen in New England at the center of its renovated 19th-century factory campus, the museum takes over an old airplane hangar for one night each year, projecting flight-themed film onto an even larger 90′ x 22′ hangar door.

Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and carloads of friends to watch Airplane! under the stars. The Leslie Nielsen classic is an in-air adventure that features some of the most enduringly adolescent puns in American movie history, not to mention Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in one of the most bizarre movie cameos ever recorded.

Gates for the event will open at 6:30pm at North Adams’ Harriman-West airport on Route 2. Lickety Split and MASS MoCA will serve up classic drive-in fare – popcorn, ice cream, hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks, soft drinks, beer, and wine (no coolers will be allowed).

In collaboration with the City of North Adams and Motorama, antique and hot rod cars are on display before the movie begins. Balsa planes will be distributed to the first 100 kids. The audience is encouraged to come early to enjoy the great views. The movie will start at 8 pm. Tickets sold at the gate are $14 per car or $7 for adults and $3 for kids under 12.

And don’t call me Shirley.
