(HUDSON, N.Y.) – A solo exhibition of paintings by Athens, N.Y.-based artist Yura Adams goes on display at John Davis Gallery on Thursday, April 24, 2014, and will remain hung through May 19. There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, April 26, 2014, from 6 to 8pm. 

“This group of recent oil paintings shows a new development in my painting that is looser, and more concerned with the spontaneity of paint,” says Adams in a written statement. “I use a lot of medium in the paint and load up my brush to keep it that way. I paint to invent and to create relationships of shape and color I have not seen before. Human figures are almost always present. They appear in scenarios I develop in the paintings in relationship with abstract forms that delight me when they appear. By isolating figures and creating relationships with abstraction, mystery is implied. These paintings are a response to visual experiences I have — at least they start there. When I paint, I feel like I am in a tunnel, and the act of originating the imagery illuminates my experience of humanity.”

Yura Adams was born in Sioux City, Iowa. She received a BFA in painting and an MFA in performance art and photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited as a painter and intermedia artist throughout the United States in venues such as The New Museum and Experimental Intermedia in New York City, and most recently in a one-person show at the John Davis Gallery in Hudson. Adams has been the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts, Individual Artist grant and is currently a regional representative in the NYFA Mark program. She has taught art at IS183 Art School of the Berkshires in Stockbridge, Mass.; Columbia Greene Community College of Hudson, NY, where she is director of the Foundation Gallery; and Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.
