‘BIG HEAD’ TODD PARK MOHR to PLAY HELSINKI HUDSON
(HUDSON, N.Y.) –Todd Park Mohr, the eponymous leader of rock group Big Head Todd & the Monsters, will perform a solo show at Club Helsinki Hudson on Saturday, May 3, at 8pm. Founded as a trio in Boulder, Colorado, in 1986, by three students from Columbine High School, Big Head Todd & the Monsters quickly built a strong reputation on the local club circuit. The band grew beyond the Colorado club circuit through constant touring, gathering a loyal, dedicated following for the group’s funky blues-rock and gaining popularity on the jam-band circuit.

(POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.) – Van Cliburn Competition finalist Fei-Fei Dong will assay the most technically demanding and monumental piano concerto of all time, the powerful Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3, as featured soloist with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic at the Bardavon on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at 8pm. The evening will also include a performance of Pulitzer Prize-winner Jennifer Higdon’s Concerto for Orchestra.
JAPANESE FLUTE BLENDS with TURKISH-INSPIRED POETRY at CCCA EVENT
(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Hudson, N.Y.-based duo Eric Keenaghan and Jeffrey Lependorf will perform East Meets East Meets West, an evening of poetry and music at the CCCA (209 Warren St.) on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at 5pm. The event, in conjunction with the Not Necessarily Black & White exhibit currently on view, features poet Keenaghan and musician Lependorf in their debut performing as a duo. Keenaghan will read from Palace Songs, a cycle of poems inspired by Turkish talismans, while Lependorf performs masterpieces of Zen meditation music on the shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute.
HOLMES BROTHERS to BRING FUNKY SOUL-GOSPEL to CLUB HELSINKI HUDSON
(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Bluesy soul-gospel trio the Holmes Brothers bring their unique stew of Southern funk and Northern blues to Club Helsinki Hudson on Friday, May 2, 2014, at 9pm. A longtime favorite of Club Helsinki audiences, the award-winning Holmes Brothers – bassist/vocalist Sherman Holmes, guitarist/pianist/vocalist Wendell Holmes, drummer/vocalist and brother-in-spirit Popsy Dixon – take songs from all over the musical map, be they blues, soul, gospel, country, bluegrass, or R&B, and refine them into their unique blend of sweet harmonies and soulful grit. It makes the brothers as adept at covering the Beatles and Blind Willie Johnson as Hank Williams and Nick Lowe. They take it to church one moment and take it to the juke joint the next. And they make it all make sense.

(HILLSDALE, N.Y.) – The Hudson Valley Choral Society will perform works by Rosephanye Powell, William Byrd, Edward Elgar, Felix Mendelssohn, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and others at its spring concert at the United Methodist Church in Hillsdale on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at 7:30pm. The singers will be accompanied by Gili Melamed-Lev, piano; Everett McNair, percussion; and Cheryl Jones, flute. The concert will be conducted by Gretchen Rueckheim.
