(ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.) — Justin Vivian Bond kicks off the 2014 Bard SummerScape festival’s Spiegeltent program on Thursday, July 3, 2014, in a season that features such internationally acclaimed cabaret artists as Amanda Palmer, Meow Meow, and Joey Arias. The 1980’s teen queen Molly Ringwaldperforms songs from her debut album of jazz standards, “Except Sometimes,” on Saturday, July 5, 2014, at 8:30pm. Other acts performing later this summer include Weimar New York, the ever-popular Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, and folksinger Martha Wainwright.
PAUL CEBAR BRINGS ECLECTIC ROOTS-ROCK to HELSINKI HUDSON
(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Paul Cebar Tomorrow Sound bring their funky brand of world-beat-influenced rock ‘n’ roll to Club Helsinki Hudson on Thursday, July 3, at 8pm. Cebar’s quirky take on bluesy rock with an underpinning of R&B and jump blues, laced with his witty vocals, buzzfeed guitar licks, and gritty percussion raised on African, Latin and Caribbean influences, is like a Midwestern version of NRBQ, or Frank Zappa meets Tom Waits in the garage with Latin Playboys.
FRANK ZAPPA’S SON CARRIES on FATHER’S MUSICAL LEGACY at MAHAIWE
(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.) – Guitarist Dweezil Zappa, son of the late musical visionary Frank Zappa, brings his group Zappa Plays Zappa to the Mahaiwe on Sunday, July 6, 2014, at 7 pm. Zappa will also teach a guitar master class on Sunday at 3pm. Dweezil Zappa began the Zappa Plays Zappa project in 2006 to keep his father’s music alive and introduce it to new audiences.
LOCOS POR JUANA BRINGS LATIN FUNK to HELSINKI HUDSON
(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Grammy Award-nominated Latin funk group Locos Por Juana brings its unique fusion of Latin dance, hip-hop, reggae and funk to Club Helsinki Hudson on Saturday, July 5, at 9pm. The Miami-based group, which aptly describes its dance-groove music as “island swing,” plays a funky, pan-Latin, horn-inflected amalgam of Afro-Caribbean sounds rooted in the musicians’ Colombian ancestry.
GROUP EXHIBITION at CARRIE HADDAD GALLERY REFERENCES NATURE
(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Nurture Nature, an exhibition featuring new paintings by Jeff Briggs, photographs by Jerry Freedner, and works by Kim McLean, runs through Saturday, July 13 at Carrie Haddad Gallery. The shared theme of the exhibit dances around the subject of nature, its many forms, and the effects of human influence. A section of the exhibit is in memoriam to Lanie Cecula, a multimedia artist and close friend of Carrie Haddad, and includes a never-before-seen selection of Cecula’s personal drawings.
