Blues Visionary Buddy Guy Coming to the Mahaiwe

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.) —  Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Buddy Guy, a six-time Grammy Award-winner and blues legend who Rolling Stone named one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time, will perform at the Mahaiwe on Friday, July 11, 2014, at 8pm. As an exponent of electric Chicago blues and a guitarist in Muddy Waters’s band as well as in the house band at Chess Records, Guy has been critically influential on blues-based rock guitarists including Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

More than all that, though, as a singular musical visionary, with an unprecedented dynamic range (his guitar could whisper as powerfully as it could scream), with a fluency in blues history, and with more than a fair share of good old showmanship, Buddy Guy carved out a niche that connected the blues to rock, and as a jazz and avant-garde-minded improvisationalist, he set the playing field for Jimi Hendrix and all those who followed in his wake.

Going to see and hear Buddy Guy is not going to a blues concert. It’s like going to hear Miles Davis play trumpet, or going to the Modern Museum of Art to study the works of Pablo Picasso.

Tickets to Buddy Guy are $30 to $105. The Mahaiwe is located at 14 Castle Street in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Box office hours are Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 6:00pm and three hours before show times. A limited number of $15 tickets are available for patrons ages 30 and younger through the Mahaiwe ArtSmart Tix program. For tickets and information, visit the Mahaiwe or call 413.528.0100.
