Simi Stone Brings ‘Mountain Motown,’ All-Star Band, to Club Helsinki Hudson

Simi Stone(HUDSON, N.Y.) – If you only go to one concert this year, go see Woodstock-based soul-rock singer-songwriter Simi Stone play her signature brand of “Mountain Motown” music with her all-star band comprised of bandmates of David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, the B-52s, and Gang of Four at Club Helsinki Hudson on Saturday, July 26, at 9pm.

I saw Stone and her group perform late last year (click here for review), and it was serious crush – musical and otherwise – at first sight. Stone has superstar talent; the only question remains does talent actually make you a superstar these days (from the sound of the top 10, the answer is no). So in the meantime, you can see this amazing fireball heat up the intimate stage at Helsinki with one of the world’s greatest rock bands – basically David Bowie’s band crossed with Gang of Four. Stone’s band includes drummer Zack Alford (Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Vernon Reid), bassist Sara Lee (Gang of Four, B-52s, Ani DiFranco), and bassist Gail Ann Dorsey (David Bowie, Tears for Fears, Gang of Four), as well as keyboardist David Baron.

Simi StoneStone herself is a dynamo who plays violin, guitar and percussion and boasts a huge, versatile voice. She writes catchy pop tunes, dance numbers, and compelling, introspective folk songs. Her alluring presence has been engaged in the services of videos and album art for Metallica and Cornershop, and she’s a dynamic performer both in the recording studio (check out her YouTube video for “Fear the Beat”) and onstage, no doubt owing in some part to her early experience in musical theater and off-Broadway.

Reviewing her December 2013 show at Helsinki Hudson, I wrote, “If there is any justice in the world, her upcoming album will propel Stone into national consciousness as a major new force on the pop-soul scene…. What the world needs now – right now, and not a moment too late – is Simi Stone, in all of her multitalented, glorious appeal.”

Stone names Aretha Franklin, Sly Stone, old school Madonna, Donna Summer, and Whitney Houston as influences, and as far as I’m concerned, she should be mentioned among them as a peer.
