(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Alternative bluegrass ensemble Crooked Still, back together again this autumn after a three-year hiatus, plays one of its first reunion gigs at Club Helsinki Hudson on Wednesday, September 24, at 8pm.
After a decade of constant activity, the members of Crooked Still decided to take a break from touring in 2011 in order to pursue other projects and recharge creatively. One year quickly became three as vocalist Aoife O’Donovan made an acclaimed solo CD; banjo player Greg Liszt toured and recorded with his band the Deadly Gentlemen; and bassist Corey DiMario, fiddler Brittany Haas, and cellist Tristan Clarridge all collaborated with a long list of acoustic music’s top artists.
Now, the group is back, ready to entertain audiences with its innovative bluegrass style that embraces material ranging from old-time folk, gospel and country tunes to Robert Johnson blues, Beatles pop, and contemporary singer-songwriter material by the likes of Paul Simon and Gillian Welch, all given the band’s unique imprint – the soft, dreamy, mellow vocals of Aoife O’Donovan combined with the band’s high energy, technical skill, and unusual instrumentation.
