(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds will bring their old-school, horn-inflected soul and R&B to Club Helsinki Hudson on Friday, January 16, at 9pm. The Brooklyn-based sextet, fronted by Catskill Mountains native Arleigh Kincheloe aka Sister Sparrow, and featuring her brother Jackson Kincheloe on harmonica, plays a gritty, Southern style of soul that’s been garnering raves for its live appearances at festivals including Bonnaroo, Mountain Jam, Gathering of the Vibes, moe.down, and the Voodoo Experience, as well as shared appearances with Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Counting Crows, Avett Brothers, Govt’ Mule, Rebirth Brass Band and Donald Fagen.

ARTIST’S RECEPTION for WINTER EXHIBITION at NEUMANN FINE ART
(HILLSDALE, N.Y.) – There will be an artist’s reception for Winter Nova, an eclectic group exhibition featuring work by the eight artists represented by Neumann Fine Art, at the gallery on Saturday, January 17, at 5:30pm. RHINEBECK CHAMBER CONCERT CELEBRATES WOMEN COMPOSERS, MUSICIANS
(RHINEBECK, N.Y.) – “A Celebration of Women in Music,” a program of works written and performed by women and featuring world-renowned flutist Eugenia Zukerman, takes place at the Church of the Messiah on Sunday, January 18, at 3pm. The program, presented by the Rhinebeck Chamber Music Society (RCMS), includes works by Clara Schumann, Fanny Hensel (Mendelssohn’s sister), and Amy Beach, introduced by contemporary composers Joan Tower, Victoria Bond, Paula Kimper and Karen Lefrak. In addition to Zukerman, performers include pianist Babette Hierholzer; lyric soprano Kimberly Kahan; and the Kleio Quartet.

CCCA ANNUAL JURIED ART SHOW OPENS at OPERA HOUSE
(HUDSON, N.Y.) – The opening reception for the Columbia County Council on the Arts Annual Juried Art Show at the Hudson Opera House will take place on Saturday January 17, from 5 to 7pm. Works by three dozen regional artists are included in the exhibition, which was curated by Jack Shear, director of the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation.

(RHINEBECK, N.Y.) – New York Times best-selling cartoonist Lucy Knisley, a native of Rhinebeck, will preview and sign copies of her new graphic novel, Displacement, at Oblong Books & Music on Friday, January 16, at 7pm. In her graphic memoirs, Lucy Knisley paints a warts-and-all portrait of contemporary, twentysomething womanhood, not unlike writer Lena Dunham (“Girls”). In the latest installment of her graphic travelogue series, Displacement, Knisley volunteers to watch over her ailing grandparents on a cruise.

(HUDSON, N.Y.) – “Queen of Serpents,” an innovative fashion exhibition featuring Baltic-style works by Lithuanian born, regionally based fashion designer Vilma Maré, is on display now through February at McDaris Fine Art (623 Warren Street). This exhibition of artisanal clothing styles includes coats, skirts and other vestments based in Baltic mythology. Besides the usual body protection and adornment of apparel, Maré also maintains its spiritual content, as protection against harm and attractor of fertility and happiness.
