Pianist Andre-Michel Schub to Play Beethoven, Chopin, Schubert at Williams College

(WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.) – Pianist Andre-Michel Schub will play works by Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin in a free recital in Chapin Hall at Williams College as part of the Williams Visiting Artist series on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at 3pm. A public master class hosted by Schub and featuring performances by talented Williams pianists will be held on Monday, March 16 at 4:15 p.m. in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall.

Schub plays a selection of classical works for piano. He begins with two works of Beethoven: Sonata op. 2 No. 3 and “Appassionata” Sonata op. 57. After an intermission the concert resumes with Chopin’s Ballade No. 3 in Ab Major, Fauré’s Nocturne No. 6 in Db Major, and Franz Schubert’s “Wanderer” Fantasy in C Major D760. Schub will be performing on the college’s magnificent Bösendorfer Imperial grand piano.

Pianist André-Michel Schub has been described by the New York Times as “pianistically flawless… a formidable pianist with a fierce integrity.” He has repeatedly performed with the world’s most prestigious orchestras, among them the Boston Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles and New York philharmonics, the Detroit Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw, and Bournemouth Symphony.

Since 1997, he has been music director of the Virginia Arts Festival Chamber Music Series, where he plans its chamber music programming and performs on a number of programs each year. He was the grand prize winner of the 1981 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, recipient of the 1977 Avery Fisher Recital Award, and winner of the 1974 Naumburg International Piano Competition.

Born in France and raised in the US, Mr. Schub first attended Princeton University and then transferred to The Curtis Institute, where he studied with Rudolf Serkin. His recordings, for Vox Cum laude, Piano Disc, Musical Heritage Society, and CBS Masterworks (now SONY Classical), include works of Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, and Liszt, as well as an all-Stravinsky album with violinist Cho-Liang Lin.

Currently on the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music, Schub has been an Artist of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 2002.
