WORLD-BEAT DANCE MUSIC from SOUTH ASIA and BALKANS at BSP

(KINGSTON, N.Y.) – New York City’s Raya Brass Band and Lahore/Brooklyn collaboration Sandaraa will perform a double-bill of danceable world-beat music at BSP on Wednesday, May 20, at 8pm. Raya Brass Band plays Balkan brass band music infused with punk-rock energy and featuring jazzy soloing, while Sandaraa plays a unique fusion of South Asian musical traditions, Eastern European sounds, and joyous, bittersweet klezmer.

MULTIMEDIA INSTALLATIONS in BACK GALLERY at BASILICA HUDSON

(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Still/Life, a 3-D rendering of contemporary practices in the Hudson area featuring works by 16 artists, opens in the Back Gallery at Basilica Hudson on Friday, May 22, at 6 to 10pm, and runs through Sunday, June 14, 2015. The installation, by HQTBD, includes an extensive schedule of screenings, performances, talks, workshops, dance, readings, and food events. The programs for the opening night of the exhibition include a screening of moving image works by three artists in the exhibition: “Many Thousands Gone” (2015) by Ephraim Asili; “Kissing Point” and “Lessons of War” (both 2014) by Peggy Ahwesh; and “Om Rider” (2014) by Takeshi Murata. All three artists will be present to discuss their work. Artists featured in the installation are Peggy Ahwesh, Ephraim Asili, Conor Backman, Annie Bielski, Hannah Black, Jeffrey Gibson, Elise McMahon, Takeshi Murata, Aily Nash, Nick Payne, Carla Perez-Gallardo, Daniel Seward, Tristan Schipa, William Stone, Earl Swanigan, and Jon Wang.

STRING TRIOS by SCHUBERT and MOZART at HUDSON OPERA HOUSE

(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Grammy Award-nominated artists Shmuel Ashkenasi and Peter Wiley will perform works by Schubert and Mozart in a program of String Trios with Helena Baillie at the Hudson Opera House on Saturday, May 23, at 7pm, as part of the Classics on Hudson series. The trio will play Schubert’s sublime B-flat Trio, followed by Mozart’s rarely performed Adagio and Fugues K. 404, written in the style of J.S. Bach. To complete the evening, Ashkenasi, Wiley and Baillie will perform the magisterial Divertimento by Mozart K.563.

OMI to SCREEN ELIZABETH MURRAY DOCUMENTARY

(GHENT, N.Y.) – A work-in-progress screening of the documentary film “Everybody Knows … Elizabeth Murray” in conjunction with the current gallery exhibition showcasing large-scale paintings and works on paper by the acclaimed artist will take place in the Visitor’s Center at Omi on Saturday, May 23, at 4pm. Access to the screening, as well as the exhibition of Murray’s work currently on view at Omi, is free and open to the public. A discussion with the filmmaker will follow, alongside a reception catered by local chef Maxwell Reisner.

INDIGO GIRLS HEADLINE POP MUSIC FESTIVAL at TANGLEWOOD

(LENOX, Mass.) – Grammy Award-winning folk duo Indigo Girls will perform on Saturday, May 23, as part of the SummerSound Live weekend of music on the grounds of Tanglewood. The two-day festival, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday, May 23-24, takes place at a parking lot outside Tanglewood’s main gates, and includes a host of national and regional acts, including Pimps of Joytime, Barefoot Truth, Adam Ezra, Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds, Bella’s Bartok, West End Blend, Whiskey Treaty Roadshow, the Interlopers, and DJ BFG.

Both Bloom and Draper are daughters of classical musicians who chose acoustic guitar and confessional folk songwriting as their main creative outlets.
