LUCINDA WILLIAMS BOOKENDS REGION at MAHAIWE and BARDAVON

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass., and POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.) – Three time Grammy Award-winner Lucinda Williams bookends our region with back-to-back concerts at the Mahaiwe in Great Barrington on Saturday, October 10, at 8pm, and at the Bardavon in Poughkeepsie on Sunday, October 11, at 7pm. Williams has been one of the most consistently lauded Americana singer-songwriters, incorporating rock, folk, and country into her achingly personal lyrics, since her eponymous debut in 1988. Her 1998 album, “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road,” is considered one of the greatest albums of the rock era.

AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE CELEBRATES 75TH ANNIVERSARY at BARD with  MARK MORRIS PREMIERE

(ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.) – American Ballet Theatre celebrates its 75th anniversary season with a world premiere by choreographer Mark Morris in the Fisher Center at Bard College this weekend with four performances – Friday, October 9 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, October 10, at 2pm and 8pm; and Sunday, October 11, at 2pm. The program includes Alexei Ratmansky’s “Piano Concerto #1” – with a live performance of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1 for Piano, Trumpet, and Strings, Op. 35 – and Paul Taylor’s “Company B.” Morris’s work is accompanied by a live performance of Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s chamber work, Septet in C, op. 114, “The Military,” with all-new costumes by Isaac Mizrahi and lighting design by Michael Chybowski.

The exhibition emphasizes art as process rather than product, the shift from realism into abstraction, and the role of color in achieving these effects.

PIANIST ROMAN RABINOVICH OPENS CLASSICS SEASON at HUDSON OPERA HOUSE

(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Continuing his rise as an international sensation, pianist Roman Rabinovich kicks off the second season of Classics on Hudson at the Hudson Opera House on Saturday, October 10, at 7pm. Rabinovich will perform the Haydn sonata in B flat; Schumann Faschingsschwank aus Wien op. 26; Haydn sonata in E flat major; and the Beethoven sonata Op 101. Praised by the New York Times for his “uncommon sensitivity and feeling,” the Israeli pianist is the winner of the 2008 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition.

(CATSKILL, N.Y.) – Brian Brooks Moving Company, the Chase Brock Experience, Jessica Lang Dance and Martha Graham Dance Company headline the third annual Hudson Valley Dance Festival on Saturday, October 10, at the Historic Catskill Point. Brian Brooks Moving Company showcases “Torrent,” an expansive piece fluctuating between orderly patterns and unrestrained turbulence. The Brooklyn-based Chase Brock Experience premieres a new piece by its namesake known for his Broadway productions and independent dance choreography. Jessica Lang Dance, famous for its mastery of visual composition and incorporation of striking design elements, presents “Lines Cubed,” a piece inspired by the paintings of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian exploring line and color and their relation to emotions and mood. And Martha Graham Dance Company, celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, presents Nacho Duato’s “Rust,” an all-male dramatic quintet stirring up awareness of the plagues of terrorism and violence today. The one-performance-only event is produced by and benefits Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
