Salsa Meets Indie-Rock at MASS MoCA

Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra (NORTH ADAMS, Mass.) – Talk about having your cake and eating it too – fans of salsa and indie-rock can have it all together in one fell swoop when Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra trades in the standard salsa repertoire for dynamic, salsa-fied arrangements of contemporary indie-rock favorites when they take the stage in MASS MoCA‘s Courtyard C on Saturday, June 1, 2013, at 8pm.

The 11-piece Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra grabs the top indie-rock songs of today and transforms them into red-hot Latin grooves. The band’s repertoire includes dynamic arrangements of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, the Black Keys, Spoon, Animal Collective, and many more.

Led by percussionist/arranger Gianni Mano (from the Latin-funk legends Radio Mundial), and featuring Argentine chanteuse Solange Prat, along with a full compliment of horns and percussion, the WSO contains some of the best young players on the scene with backgrounds from Columbia, Panama, Puerto Rico, Nueva York and all over the U.S.

Since releasing a few homegrown demos online in 2010, Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra has reimagined the salsa genre, creating an incredible, never-before-seen dichotomy between modern indie music and a standard salsa repertoire. This Brooklyn-based, multinational team of musicians includes members from Columbia, Panama, Puerto Rico, New York, and across the United States.

MTV says of the band’s genre-bending blend of popular contemporary fare and traditional ethnic sound, “Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra is the only band that really tells the [Brooklyn] neighborhood’s full story. The concept is so simple and brilliant, it’s amazing they are the first to do it.”

Tickets for Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra’s performance at MASS MoCA are $12 in advance, $16 on the day of the show, and $10 for students. Museum members receive a 10% discount. Tickets are available through the MASS MoCA Box Office located off Marshall Street in North Adams. Tickets can also be charged by phone by calling 413.662.2111 x1 during Box Office hours, or purchased on line at MASS MoCA.
