Electronic Pow-Wow Dances Summer Away at MASS MoCA

A Tribe Called Red(NORTH ADAMS, Mass.) – Canadian EDM group A Tribe Called Red, who combine dubstep with elements of First Nations music, bring down the curtain on MASS MoCA’s summer performing arts season with their club-style dance music on Saturday, August 31, 2013, at 8pm in MASS MoCA’s brick-lined courtyard.

Tinting Native American tradition with a distinctly urban color, A Tribe Called Red’s original sound is at the forefront of Ontario’s club-music scene. This Ontario-based aboriginal collective, made up of two-time Canadian DMC Champion DJ Shub, DJ NJN, and DJ Bear Witness, produces a throbbing sound culled from various musical styles that include hip-hop, electronic, dance, and their own mash-up of club and pow-wow music. The band uses digital turntables combined with intense drums and powerful vocal chanting to create hauntingly urgent beats that reimagine pow-wow music for urbanized aboriginal youth, to transform stereotypes into dance floor rhythms.

A Tribe Called Red 2The New York Times describes A Tribe Called Red’s music as an “effective hybrid of the more urgent end of electronic music with pow-wow music, the traditional drumming and singing of various American Indian tribes. The hypnotic qualities of both make a slick pair.”  The band’s eponymous album, A Tribe Called Red, released in March 2012, was included in the Washington Post‘s top 10 album picks of the year and was nominated for one of Canada’s most prestigious music awards, the Polaris Music Prize.

Tickets for the show are $15 for adults and $10 for students. MASS MoCA members receive a 10% discount. Tickets are available through the MASS MoCA Box Office located on Marshall Street in North Adams, open from 10AM to 6PM, closed Tuesdays.
