Danish Company to Stage Darkly Comic Puppet Drama at Opera House

the house(HUDSON, N.Y.) – The House, a darkly comic puppet drama about the changing of the guard at a family-owned funeral home, will be staged by Denmark’s Sofie Krog Teater at Hudson Opera House on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 7pm, and Sunday, March 2, at 4pm. Working with Spanish puppeteer David Faraco, award-winning Danish puppeteer Sofie Krog has created an ensemble of weird and wonderful puppets, all united by the story of The House; a character in itself.

The House tells the story of the Warehouse Family Funeral Home. On her deathbed, the undertaker changes her last will and testament, a secret begins to unravel and an evil plan is formed. Krog and Faraco lead you behind closed doors and into rooms which hide unspeakably dark deeds.

This complex puppet performance takes place in a revolving set featuring intricate lighting, strange contraptions and scary sound effects; the perfect setting for this comically chilling journey. The puppets are brought to life with such expert skill that they seem to have developed their own autonomy. They are also hilarious, holding audiences spellbound.

Danish director, self-taught actor, puppet-maker and puppeteer Sofie Krog was originally educated within physical theatre, Method acting, comedy, and mime in schools in Denmark and abroad, but is today working as a self-taught doll maker and puppeteer. Like an artistic one-woman army, Krog conceives, creates and performs her animations theater with shows crackling with crazy, unschooled creativity. Anything is possible in the Sofie Krog Teater. where puppets roll their eyes and theatre reveals its mysterious inner life.

Sofie Krog founded the company Sofie Krog Teater in 2003. Krog created several small shows of circus and cabaret before she was drawn into the world of puppetry. Her 2009 award-winning performance “DIVA” sold out two shows at Hudson Opera House and enjoyed success all over the world. In 2008, she began cooperation with David Faraco, set designer, puppeteer & actor of the company Libélula Puppet Theatre.

The Hudson Opera House offers a year-round schedule of arts and cultural programming in the 1855 former Hudson City Hall which contains New York State’s oldest surviving theatre. The Hudson Opera House provides free or low-cost cultural offerings every week of the year. Ongoing programs include concerts, readings, lectures, exhibitions, theatre and dance presentations, after-school programs, workshops, classes, and community arts events like the annual Winter Walk on Warren Street.
