(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Grammy Award-nominated British singer-songwriter Karl Wallinger, who performs under the band name World Party, brings his catalog of pop-rock confections to Club Helsinki Hudson on Monday, May 26, 2014, at 8pm. The music of World Party is influenced by and recalls the greats of the rock era, from the Beatles to the Kinks, the Beach Boys, The Band, Neil Young, the Rolling Stones, Dr. John, and Prince.
PERFORMANCE PIONEER and VISUAL ARTIST JOHN KELLY at HUDSON OPERA HOUSE
(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Pioneering performance artist John Kelly will be in residence at Hudson Opera House over Memorial Day Weekend for a creative doubleheader: the opening of his exhibition, Muse Ascending a Staircase, a multi-media work paying homage to Marcel Duchamp’s scandalous Nude Descending a Staircase, and two performances of The Caravaggio Songs: Music from The Escape Artist. The exhibition opens on Saturday, May 24, 2014, from 5 to 7pm, followed immediately by The Caravaggio Songs at 7pm. A second performance of Caravaggio is on Sunday, May 25, also at 7pm.
WESLEY STACE’S ‘CABINET OF WONDERS’ to VISIT SPOTTY DOG
(HUDSON, N.Y.) – “The Cabinet of Wonders,” a musical and literary variety show based at New York City’s City Winery and hosted by author Wesley Stace, aka John Wesley Harding, will pay an upstate visit to Spotty Dog Books & Ale on Saturday, May 24, 2014, at 8pm. In addition to Stace reading from his new novel, Wonderkid, and performing a few songs, the event will feature authors David Grand and Emma Jane Tourtelot, singer-songwriter Amy Rigby, and a reading/sound performance by Karen Schoemer with Tyson Hauf, host of the Zooms radio program on WGXC 90.7 FM Hudson.
RASPUTINA to BRING MODERN VICTORIAN FOLK-ROCK to HELSINKI HUDSON
(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Singer-songwriter and cellist Melora Creager brings her Modern Victorian folk-rock group, Rasputina, to Club Helsinki Hudson on Thursday, May 22, at 8pm. Since 1991, Melora Creager – who calls Hudson home — has been exploring the affinities among modern rock, cello, and Victorian folk in original songs that connect the dots between Renaissance madrigals and Nirvana-like grunge-rock.

Both artists mine early rock ‘n’ roll styles as well as their roots and tributaries, including country, blues and R&B, on their way toward making new indie-rock with the immediacy and passion of 1950s and early-’60s music.
