(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Grammy Award-nominated vocalist Shemekia Copeland will bring her singular brand of modern blues, funk, soul and R&B to Club Helsinki Hudson on Friday, October 3, at 9pm. The daughter of the late Texas blues guitar legend Johnny Clyde Copeland, Shemekia Copeland has established her own primacy in the field, literally having been crowned the new “Queen of the Blues” by the late Koko Taylor’s daughter, Cookie.
(ANNANDALE-on-HUDSON, N.Y.) – In the second in a regular series of conversations hosted by Bard professor Neil Gaiman, author and artist Audrey Niffenegger (“The Time Traveler’s Wife”) discusses time travel, Doctor Who, graveyards, taxidermy, graphic novels, pictures, books, and long-distance romance. The program takes place on Friday, October 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sosnoff Theater in the Fisher Center at Bard College.
(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Hudson native Elisabeth Sheffield will read from and sign copies of her new novel, “Helen Keller Really Lived” – which has nothing to do with Helen Keller – at Spotty Dog Books & Ale on Wednesday, October 1, at 7pm. Set in eastern upstate New York, “Helen Keller Really Lived” features a fortyish former barfly and grifter who must make a living in the wake of her wealthy husband’s death, and who finds work in a clinic helping women seeking reproductive assistance. The other main character is the grifter’s dead ex-husband, a Ukrainian hooker-to-healer success story, who prior to his demise was a gynecologist and after, an amateur folklorist, or ghostlorist, who collects and provides scholarly commentary on the stories of his fellow “revenants.”
(POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.) – The Hudson Valley Philharmonic opens its 55th season performing works by Beethoven, Mahler and Nino Rota at the Bardavon on Sunday, October 5, at 3pm. The concert includes a performance of Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor. The program will also include Beethoven’s moving Egmont Overture and a rare performance of Nino Rota’s Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra in C, featuring Bradley Ward, the HVP’s principal trombonist, as soloist.
(HUDSON, N.Y.) – San Francisco-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Sean Hayes brings his band and his rootsy sound to Club Helsinki Hudson on Saturday, October 4, at 9pm. Durham, N.C.-based dreampop duo Eric and Erica will warm up the crowd for Hayes as well as perform with him in his trio.
