KEIGWIN + COMPANY BRINGS DIVERSE DANCE PROGRAM to MASS MOCA

(NORTH ADAMS, Mass.) – Dance ensemble KEIGWIN + COMPANY will bring a mixed program of high art and pure entertainment, featuring a variety of diverse contemporary works that embody the company’s signature wit, broad musicality, and profound emotional capacity, to the Hunter Center at MASS MoCA on Saturday, April 11, at 8pm and Sunday, April 12, at 3pm, in a co-presentation with Jacob’s Pillow Dance. The program includes Waterfront, a full-company work danced to Leonard Bernstein’s score from the movie On the Waterfront; Boys, a male quartet danced to Eartha Kitt music; the world premiere of Panic, Larry Keigwin’s first new solo in more than ten years; and Triptych, supported by stark lighting and the pulsating beat of composer Jonathan Pratt’s original score.

INDIAN RAGA COLLECTIVE at RACE BROOK LODGE

(SHEFFIELD, Mass.) – Brooklyn Raga Massive, a collective of musicians devoted to Indian classical music in all its variety, from traditional raga to interpretations of contemporary minimalism, will perform in the Barn at Race Brook Lodge on Saturday, April 11, at 8pm. Members of Brooklyn Raga Massive, as the BRM Groove Ensemble, will also be appearing the Down County Social Club at Race Brook’s Stagecoach Tavern on Thursday, April 9, at 9pm. The Groove Ensemble is an opportunity for BRM members to branch out into more eclectic styles of world music.

extreme realities bannerENVIRONMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL SCREENS FREE AWARD-WINNING DOCS at MAHAIWE & TRIPLEX

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.) – Eight award-winning environmental films will be shown free the weekend of April 11-12 at the Mahaiwe and the Triplex in Great Barrington as part of the 5th annual Project Native Film Festival. On Saturday, April 11, there will be a special screening of “Just Eat It: A food waste story,” at the Mahaiwe, with the directors and subjects of the film on hand for a Q & A following the film. On Sunday, April 12, seven award-winning environmental films will be shown at the Triplex Cinema, kicking off with a Family Program featuring “Deepo – A Fish Story” and “Watermelon Magic,” both presented in 3D, beginning at 10am. Other films scheduled for Sunday include “Extreme Realities,” “Open Sesame: The Story of Seeds,” “Oil & Water,” “Angel Azul,” “Cowspiracy” and “The Human Experiment.”

(WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.) – Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and Bang on a Can cofounder David Lang – one of my all-time favorite composers and a helluva nice guy – gives a lecture entitled ‘The Secret History of “the little match girl passion”’in Room 30 of Bernhard Music Center on the Williams College campus on Tuesday, April 14, at 4:15 pm. This lecture is free and open to the public. Lang will discuss the genesis of “the little match girl passion,” his Pulitzer Prize-winning work that he composed in Williamstown, and its connection to Williams College.

STRING TRIO to PLAY WORKS by BIBER and BACH at THE CLARK

(WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.) – Violinist Colin Jacobsen, violist Nicholas Cords, and cellist Edward Arron will perform two of the most treasured masterworks in the repertoire: Heinrich Biber’s Passacaglia in G Minor for Solo Violin, and Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations, at the Clark Art Institute on Sunday, April 12, at 4 pm, in the Clark Center, West Pavilion. Immediately following the concert, there will be a brief reception with the artists.

PIANO VIRTUOSO FREDERIC CHIU to PERFORM DEBUSSY-PROKOFIEV ‘SMACKDOWN’ at SIMON’S ROCK

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.) ? Pianist Frederic Chiu will perform a program of favorite compositions by two 20th-century master pianist-composers, Claude Debussy and Serge Prokofiev, in his fourth appearance at South Berkshire Concerts in the McConnell Auditorium at Simon’s Rock College on Sunday, April 12 at 3pm. This performance is part of a series that Chiu has offered over the past several years that pits great composers against each other in a competition for audience preference. The event includes a polling of the audience following the performance to see which composer emerges as the favorite. Statistics from previous such concerts indicate a very close split in the vote among the listeners.

PIANIST BRINGS SONDHEIM PROJECT to WILLIAMS

(WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.) – Anthony de Mare brings his “Liaisons: Re-Imagining Sondheim for the Piano” program to Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall on the Williams College campus on Friday, April 10, at 8pm. “Liaisons” is based on the songs of legendary musical theater composer Stephen Sondheim, a Williams graduate from the Class of 1950. The project has brought together 36 of the world’s foremost contemporary composers to “re-imagine” one of Sondheim’s songs as a solo piano piece. Among the pieces featured are “Finishing the Hat – Two Pianos” by Steve Reich, based on Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park with George,” and “That Old Piano Roll” by Wynton Marsalis, based on “Follies.” In all, de Mare will present a dozen works from Sondheim’s repertoire.
