ELECTRO-FOLK SUPERGROUP to PLAY HELSINKI HUDSON

(HUDSON, N.Y.) – The Platte Clove Nature Theater, a supergroup of Hudson Valley electro-folk talent, brings its unique and theatrical blend of electronic and organic sounds, complex compositions, looped and layered vocals, video projections, aerial movement and more to Club Helsinki Hudson on Sunday, June 7, at 8pm. A musical collaboration among three visionary performers — Ryder Cooley, Luis Mojica and Fredo Viola – the ensemble offers a veritable musical odyssey, and will be joined by special guest musicians including Melora Creager of Rasputina.

SCULPTURAL TRIBUTE to SUN RA by REGINALD MADISON OPENS at CR10

(LINLITHGO, N.Y.) – “Heliocentric Omni Verse,” a sculptural installation paying tribute to Sun Ra, the late jazz visionary and bandleader, by artist Reginald Madison, opens at CR10 Arts on Saturday, June 6, with a reception from 4 to 6pm, featuring Sun Ra music performed live by the Star Gazers, as well as screenings of “Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise,” the 1980 film by Robert Mugge documenting performances by the Sun Ra Arkestra. The exhibit remains on view through June 21.

JOSEPH LUZZI READS from MEMOIR of LOVE and LOSS at THIRD FLOOR GALLERY

(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Joseph Luzzi will read from his new book, “In a Dark Wood: What Dante Taught Me About Grief, Healing, and the Mysteries of Love,” at the Third Floor Gallery on Sunday, June 7, at 2pm. The free event, a presentation of Karen Schoemer, Bookseller, will include a performance of Italian music by violinist Helena Baillie and guitarist Alexander Henry. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served and books will be available for purchase and signing. Luzzi’s “In a Dark Wood” is a literary memoir of grief and healing that chronicles how one of the greatest works in world literature — Dante’s “The Divine Comedy” — became the lodestone for a journey out of despair in the wake of an unthinkable tragedy.

NEW POST-BOP JAZZ TRIO to PERFORM at HELSINKI HUDSON

(HUDSON, N.Y.) – The Late Regulars, a new jazz trio featuring three of the Hudson area’s finest instrumental and improvisational talents, will perform their mix of original compositions and renditions by great composers of the 1960s and ‘70s at Club Helsinki Hudson on Monday, June 8, at 8pm. Drummer Otto Hauser, bassist Terence Murren, and pianist Tony Kieraldo play post-bop jazz and original compositions that fit right in with tunes by Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Sam Rivers and Ornette Coleman. Reviewing their recent debut at Helsinki Hudson, local music critic Seth Rogovoy wrote, “Those who were there witnessed the birth of something cool. Very cool.”

JAMES AUTERY SOLO PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW OPENS at HUDSON OPERA HOUSE

(HUDSON, N.Y.)  – A solo exhibition of photographs by James Autery opens at the Hudson Opera House on Saturday, June 6, with a reception with the artist from 5 to 7pm. The exhibition will remain on view through Sunday, July 5. James Autery started photographing and printing in the darkroom in high school at the age of 16. While attending the University of Missouri-Columbia, he created a portfolio of intimate black and white images following the Lee family, Korean immigrants newly arrived in Missouri, to examine their daily lives and interconnectedness as a family. One of these images was a finalist in the 2006 Gordon Parks International Photography Competition.

Acoustic trio Quiet In The Head, the ongoing musical project of guitarist Seamus Maynard, violinist Jonathan Talbott and cellist Jonah Thomas, performs at Spotty Dog Books & Ale (440 Warren St.) on Friday, June 5, at 8pm. The trio’s original acoustic music has evolved over many years of playing together and is always an exploration of texture and melody. There are echoes of familiar influences such as tango, Middle Eastern and Eastern European gypsy music, but ultimately the musicians search far and wide for new sounds.

His live performances are the stuff of legend, and as a festival headliner and solo performer he easily commands the attention of fully electric rock bands. Sexton typically sells out Club Helsinki in advance of his shows.
