Dance Installation to Inaugurate 2014 Season at Basilica Hudson

Jonah Bokaer's Eclipse(HUDSON, N.Y.) – A collaboration between world-renowned choreographer Jonah Bokaer and visual artist Anthony McCall, kicks off the 2014 performance season at Basilica Hudson on Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26, 2014, at 7:30pm. Eclipse is a multidisciplinary performance that integrates choreography, light, visual design, and an audio-visual time score to arrive at altered ways of viewing a performance.

First imagined while the artists were in residence in Hudson in 2012 and working at Basilica Hudson, Eclipse creates illusions of expanded space through the use of movement, visual design, lighting, and media. The piece features four dancers and Bokaer dancing at the center of a site-specific freestanding seating configuration. Viewers will be invited to circumnavigate the piece, experiencing the dancers and McCall’s spare, sculptural set from all sides.

Jonah Bokaer has cultivated a new form of choreography whose structural supports rely on visual art and design to transform public viewing and understanding of dance. Born to Tunisian and American parents, and active as a choreographer since 2002, he is the author of 55+ works spanning stage, gallery, museum, film, opera, app, and installation. His works have been produced in Belgium, Canada, Cuba, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, India, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Bokaer works internationally, and has been active in Bushwick, Brooklyn since the late 1990s.

Occupying a space between choreography, visual art, and moving images, Bokaer has created work for museum spaces since 2002. This approach has been acknowledged internationally by museums including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, PS1 MoMA, The New Museum, The Museum of Arts & Design, MASS MoCA, Miami MOCA, MAC Marseille, IVAM Valencia, Palazzo Delle Arti Napoli, Kunsthalle St. Gallen, SCAD Museum of Art, Ludwig Museum of Budapest, MUDAM Luxembourg, among others.

Bokaer has frequently worked with Daniel Arsham (2007-Present), Anne Carson, Richard Chai, Merce Cunningham, Anthony McCall, Abbott Miller, Tino Sehgal, Robert Wilson (2007-Present), and many other leading innovators spanning performance, visual art, literature, and design.
