(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Ryder Cooley & Dust Bowl Faeries and Melora & Luis, featuring Melora Creager of Rasputina, will perform a double bill of original, ethereal gothic-folk at Caffe Lena on Saturday, June 27, at 8pm.
Melora & Luis are Melora Creager, the founder/leader of the all-cello rock group Rasputina, and Luis Mojica, the internationally renowned pianist and experimental vocalist. Creager is a world-renowned cellist and vocalist who, in addition to her work with Rasputina, which includes seven full-length albums as well as over a dozen EPs and live records — including her brand-new release, “Unknown” — is a visual artist and jewelry designer for top names, including Erickson Beamon, Anna Sui, Donna Karan, Barney’s New York, and Vogue magazine. Creager is widely credited with helping to birth the freak-folk and Steampunk movements.
Luis Mojica is a pianist and performer who creates vocal layers and beat box percussion through a looping pedal. Together, Melora & Luis combine their love of classical composition, timeless themes, and hip-hop beats to create a new sound that draws from rock, opera, classical, hip-hop, avant-garde and folk.
Dust Bowl Faeries is an electro-acoustic, multimedia gothic-folk ensemble led by artist-musician Ryder Cooley and featuring Sara Ayers, Karen Cole, Jen DuBois, JoAnn Stevelos, and Hazel, a transgender taxidermy sheep. Dust Bowl Faeries combine otherworldly, girl-group harmonies with unique instrumentation – including accordion, musical saw, ukulele, lap-steel guitar, keyboards, and percussion to put across Ryder Cooley’s original-yet-ancient, modern-day fables of the mystical world between waking and dreaming. Capital Region rock critic Michael Eck described them as “At once winsome and terrifying, charming and bold.”
Dust Bowl Faeries just completed a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign which raised $10,000 in 30 days to fund the band’s upcoming debut recording, which will be produced by music critic Seth Rogovoy.
The collective vision of these two ensembles, which at Caffe Lena are likely to intertwine personnel and feature special guests, brings a symphonic dreamscape of songs, stories and sounds to the stage.
The historic Caffe Lena is at 47 Philadelphia St, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
