Had it not been for Robert Sterling Clark — the same Clark whose home and art collection became the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Mass., the Beatles as we know them may never have existed, therefore forever altering the course of the second half of the 20th century in ways impossible to imagine. The missing link was a thoroughbred racehorse named Never Say Die, and a lucky bet placed by a woman named Mona Best.
