(Movie Review) ‘The Trip’ by Michael Winterbottom

The Trip
Directed by Michael Winterbottom
Starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon

Review by Seth Rogovoy

Patched together from separate episodes of a British TV series, The Trip is a kind of mockumentary, following the verbal antics of actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as they tour Northern England’s finer restaurants. The setup is merely an excuse to get these two friends who endlessly annoy each other to interact, talk, discuss, insult and one-up each other. The end result is a kind of buddy movie version of My Dinner with Andre with a Larry David/Curb Your Enthusiasm approach as filtered through an English sensibility. Which means it’s hysterically funny.

The Trip is running at the Triplex Cinema in Great Barrington, Mass., through Thursday, Aug 11, 2011.
