BERKSHIRE MUSEUM EXHIBIT CELEBRATES ART and LEGACY of PAPER

(PITTSFIELD, Mass.) – PaperWorks: The Art and Science of an Extraordinary Material, a new exhibition that explores paper as a source of creative inspiration and innovation, opens at Berkshire Museum on Saturday, June 15, 2013. PaperWorks features compelling contemporary works of art by more than 30 artists, all made from paper, as well as an array of objects and artifacts that show the uses of paper in industry, science, fashion, and technology. PaperWorks will be on view through October 26, 2013. The opening reception for PaperWorks will be held on Friday, June 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Visitors will be able to preview the exhibition; light refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.

TIMELY NEW POLITICAL PLAY PREMIERES at BARRINGTON STAGE

(PITTSFIELD, Mass.) – Muckrakers, a new play by Zayd Dohrn, will have its world premiere production at Barrington Stage Company (BSC) beginning on Thursday, June 13, 2013. Starring Kate Rogal and Kahan James in their BSC debuts, the timely play centers around a young female activist who brings an older man  – a famous political hacker/journalist – home to her Brooklyn apartment to spend the night. But as they start to expose each other’s secrets, personal and political desires collide, testing the limits of privacy in the modern world.

PS21 KICKS OFF SEASON with BACH

(CHATHAM, N.Y.) – PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century kicks off its 2013 performance season with the eighth annual Paul Grunberg Memorial Bach Concert on Saturday, June 15, 2013, at 7:30pm. This all-Bach program features Eugene Drucker on violin and Marija Stroke on piano, performing one unaccompanied work for each instrument and two together: D Minor Partita for solo violin; Keyboard Partita in B flat Major; and piano-violin sonatas in F Minor and E Major.

LEONARD BERNSTEIN MUSIC ‘ON THE TOWN’ OPENS BSC SEASON

(PITTSFIELD, Mass.) – The Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden and Adolph Green musical On the Town opens the mainstage season at Barrington Stage Company (BSC) on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, and runs through July 13 on the Boyd-Quinson Mainstage. On the Town, which marked Broadway debut of the music of Bernstein, will be directed by Tony Award-winner (Urinetown) John Rando and choreographed by Emmy Award-winner (TV’s SMASH) Joshua Bergasse, with music direction by Darren R. Cohen.  The musical is based on the ballet Fancy Free by Jerome Robbins.

(PITTSFIELD, Mass.) – Audra McDonald, one of the few vocalists equally comfortable on opera, Broadway and cabaret stages, singing classical, standards, and contemporary songs, performs at the Colonial Theatre on Saturday, June 15, 2013, at 8pm. She will be accompanied by pianist Andy Einhorn. The Tony and Grammy Award-winning singer is also an actress, having appeared on many films and having played Dr. Naomi Bennett on ABC’s hit TV series “Private Practice” for four seasons.

FOLK DUO MAGPIE HEADLINES ‘JUNETEENTH’ CELEBRATION at DU BOIS CENTER

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.)  – Folk duo Magpie headlines a day-long program of music and dance performances, Civil War-era historical reenactments, speeches, recitals, artifact displays, book and memorabilia sales, and other activities commemorating the struggle to abolish slavery outside the Du Bois Center and Civil Rights Museum, 684 South Main Street, in Great Barrington on Saturday, June 15, 2013. Scheduled for Juneteenth, the date after the end of the Civil War when some slaves were finally informed that slavery was officially ended in the United States, the festivities will mark the start of the region’s second annual Lift Ev’ry Voice celebration.
