Cabaret Star Karen Akers to Perform at Meeting House

Karen Akers (Alan Mercer)(NEW MARLBOROUGH, Mass.) — Cabaret star Karen Akers performs on Saturday, September 28, 2013, at 4:30 p.m. at the Meeting House as part of the Music & More series. A gala wine-tasting follows, hosted by Domaney’s of Great Barrington.

Akers has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl and at top New York City venues including Café Carlyle and the Oak Room. She has performed internationally, in the south of France, Russia, Barcelona, and London.

Akers was an original star of the Tony Award-winning musical Grand Hotel and has appeared on PBS-TV in “Presenting Karen Akers” and “Karen Akers: On Stage at Wolf Trap.” She has numerous film credits as well. She is the recipient of the 2005 New York Nightlife Award for Outstanding Female Cabaret Vocalist in a Major Engagement, as well as the 2009 Nightlife Legend Award.

Akers will be accompanied by pianist Don Rebic, her longtime collaborator. Rebic has been a composer, musical director and pianist for more than 30 years. He has served as musical director for Akers, Peggy Lee, Maureen McGovern, Tovah Feldshuh and others. He is the artistic director of the Singers Forum, New York’s premier vocal academy. As a composer he has scored documentaries for HBO and written music for theater.

Music and More, founded and directed by Harold Lewin and sponsored by the New Marlborough Village Association, is marking its 22nd year as a late-summer destination for world-class chamber music, jazz, theatrical and literary events in historic New Marlborough. Performances are on Saturdays at 4:30 p.m., from Aug. 3 through Oct. 5.
