Is Norah Jones Playing Club Helsinki Hudson this Sunday?

norah jones(HUDSON, N.Y.) – While the official announcement says that the Wild Rovers Tour, featuring Cory Chisel, the Candles, Invisibleman, Adriel Denae, and special guests are coming to Club Helsinki Hudson this coming Sunday, October 20, 2013, at 8pm, it seems a pretty sure bet that one of those special guests is going to be Norah Jones.

Typically in these situations, a club is not allowed to advertise or even hint at the identity of a surprise “special guest,” but it’s no secret that Jones has been playing with the Wild Rovers at previous stops on the tour (see links below), sitting in with Chisel – who has been the opening act for Jones on some of her tours — and other artists on the bill.

(Interestingly, if Jones does wind up playing Helsinki, it won’t be the first time she played Club Helsinki as an unbilled vocalist with a band. Back at the old Club Helsinki in Great Barrington, Mass., Jones performed several times as a singer with the group Wax Poetic, shortly before her first album, “Come Away with Me,” was released and she became a household name.)

Americana folk-rocker Cory Chisel, who leads his own band called Wandering Sons and who was named a “Best New Artist” by Rolling Stone magazine, is the putative headliner of the tour. Chisel, who boasts a rootsy, organic approach combined with soulful vocals that should appeal to fans of everyone from Procol Harum to the Wallflowers, has toured the world, including appearances at Glastonbury, Newport Folk Festival and Bonnaroo, and has warmed up audiences for Norah Jones.

Like many artists before him, Cory Chisel first connected with the power of song – and the spellbinding possibilities of live performance – through the music he heard in church. The gospel’s rich vernacular of loss and redemption also informed his innate poetic sense and lyrical range. Chisel, the son of a Baptist preacher was raised in Babbitt, Minn., and later Appleton, Wisc.

In 2010, Chisel appeared along side Tom Waits, Jim James, Andrew Bird and more on the award winning Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s album “Preservation.” A musician uncle taught Chisel about the blues – Howlin’ Wolf, Robert Johnson, Sonny Boy Williamson – and he names Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding as his strongest musical influences.
