(STOCKBRIDGE, Mass.) – A public reception for Flight, a new exhibition of photographs capturing birds in flight over the Atlantic Ocean by Cassandra Sohn, takes place on Saturday, Sept 10, from 4 to 7, at the Sohn Fine Art Gallery, where the work will remain on view through October 10, 2011.
There will be a conversation with the artist and cocktails on Thursday, Oct. 7, from 5 to 7.
Defying the laws of physics in stop-motion photography (as opposed to film or video), Sohn follows the birds with her camera’s lens, blurring the backgrounds and creating the sensation of motion while achieving the difficult technical feat of keeping her subjects sharp and identifiable.
While working on this series, Sohn was moved by a profound sense of freedom. Her continued exploration of this emotional reaction produced several visceral images, each with an ethereal quality that reflects both the energy and peacefulness of her experiences. The movement in the images perpetuates the feeling of flying, pulling viewers into the journey.
A native of Santa Fe, N.M., Sohn previously lived and worked in New York City and abroad before moving to the Berkshires in 2007. She exhibits at galleries internationally and shoots commercially for a variety of clientele. Flight is one of several of Sohn’s fine art series where she explores the symbolic and enigmatic qualities of the ever-moving, ever-changing sea.
Sohn established Sohn Fine Art Gallery as a vehicle to collaborate with contemporary artists and cultural organizations in and around the Berkshires. Sohn Fine Art also offers custom giclee printing and photographic services. Sohn’s expertise in these fields, along with her state of the art equipment, brings her client’s visions to life. Sohn teaches photography at IS183 Art School in Stockbridge, Mass., and Berkshire Community College in Great Barrington, Mass.
