(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Bluesy soul-gospel trio the Holmes Brothers bring their unique stew of Southern funk and Northern blues to Club Helsinki Hudson on Friday, July 5, at 9pm. Originally from Christchurch, Va., the New York City-based group has shared stages and recordings with Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Willie Nelson, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Merle Haggard, Keith Richards, Al Green, Ben Harper, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Levon Helm, Rosanne Cash, Odetta, and the Jungle Brothers and has gigged all over the world – including performing for President Bill Clinton.
A longtime favorite of Club Helsinki audiences, the award-winning Holmes Brothers – bassist/vocalist Sherman Holmes, guitarist/pianist/vocalist Wendell Holmes, drummer/vocalist and brother-in-spirit Popsy Dixon – take songs from all over the musical map, be they blues, soul, gospel, country, bluegrass, or R&B, and refine them into their unique blend of sweet harmonies and soulful grit. It makes the brothers as adept at covering the Beatles and Blind Willie Johnson as Hank Williams and Nick Lowe. They take it to church one moment and take it to the juke joint the next. And they make it all make sense.
The group’s most recent album, Feed My Soul, produced by their longtime friend and collaborator Joan Osborne, deals with friendship, loyalty, family, aging, illness (Wendell Holmes triumphed over a bout with cancer), as well as politics and the current state of the world, while still maintaining the patented Holmes Brothers sense of humor. Mostly though, the album is about triumphing over adversity, overcoming obstacles and, ultimately, it is a declaration of the power and faith of a strong and devoted family.
