Blues-Rock Scion Devon Allman Brings Band to Club Helsinki Hudson

Devon Allman(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Devon Allman, son of Greg Allman, brings his own brand of bluesy guitar-rock to Club Helsinki Hudson on Thursday, December 19, 2013, at 8pm. Allman has appeared at Helsinki previously with his band, Royal Southern Brotherhood; he will be fronting the Devon Allman Band for this performance.

As heard on his recently released solo album, “Turquoise,” Devon Allman is as much or more influenced by the likes of Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and Tom Petty – whose song “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” he covers on the album – than he is by his famous father, leader of the legendary Southern-rock group, the Allman Brothers Band, and his late uncle, Duane Allman, who himself was a sometime-partner of Clapton.

Devon Allman – who grew up listening to bands including Dire Straits, AC/DC, KISS, Santana and the Rolling Stones — didn’t actually meet his father, Greg Allman, until he was 16 years old. He wound up touring with the Allman Brothers Band for their reunion tour in the early 1990s. After serving this apprenticeship-by-fire with his father, he formed the band Honeytribe, touring extensively, playing up to 300 shows a year in 42 states and ten countries. He went on to form Royal Southern Brotherhood, a kind of second-generation blues supergroup, with Cyril Neville and blues singer-guitarist Mike Zito. The group’s debut CD remained in the top 10 of the Billboard Blues Music Charts for five months.

Devon Allman’s solo album, “Turquoise,” features personal and autobiographical songs, many recounting the travails of life as a touring musician. The song titles alone offer a hint at the content: “Homesick,” “When I Left Home,” “There’s No Time,” “Turn Off the World.” The music is more in the vein of Tom Petty-like classic rock than blues or Southern rock, albeit colored and punctuated with Allman’s distinctive, bluesy guitar style, which shares musical DNA with his uncle Duane.
