Beth Orton to Bring Introspective Folk-Rock to Club Helsinki Hudson

Beth Orton (Photo Jo Metson Scott)(HUDSON, N.Y.) – English folk-rock singer-songwriter Beth Orton brings her unique, soulful art-folk to Club Helsinki Hudson on Friday, February 7, 2014, at 9pm, for “An Evening with Beth Orton.” The Brit Award-winning artist was a pioneer of “folktronica,” a style mixing elements of folk and electronica, whose pulse still can be felt in the underpinning groove of Orton’s mostly acoustic music.

After a six-year hiatus from recording, Beth Orton released “Sugaring Season” last year, which was greeted with critical acclaim and superlatives such as “masterpiece.” The songs and arrangements demonstrated Orton’s strong roots in the original 1960s-era English folk-rock scene, including Pentangle’s folk-jazz explorations and Bert Jansch-inspired guitar stylings. The soulful influence of Roberta Flack can also clearly be felt in Orton’s widely expressive vocals.

Beth Orton is a two-time Mercury Prize nominee who has collaborated with Bert Jansch, Emmylou Harris, Beck, Jim O’Rourke, Terry Callier, and Ryan Adams, among others. With its memorable single, “She Cries Your Name,” her debut 1996 LP, “Trailer Park,” was a critical smash, garnering her a spot on the next year’s Lilith Fair tour. Subsequent albums, including “Central Reservation,” “Daybreaker” and “Comfort of Strangers,” saw her solidify her place as one of the great introspective singer-songwriters of our time.

The mother of two is married to musician Sam Amidon, who often performs with Orton.
