Sculptures by Anthony Masina Go on Display at J. Damiani Gallery

Anthony Masina, Cat(HUDSON, N.Y.) – A series of cast bronze sculptures of animals by Anthony Masina are on display at J. Damiani Gallery in Hudson now through June 1, 2014.

In an artist’s statement, Masina says, “Animals are already perfectly designed. My goal is not to improve upon those designs, but to use the basic form as a basis to create something familiar but different. Some people sculpt animals by adding gesture or movement to make them expressive. I prefer to use a solid, formal position as the foundation and then stylize it with a lot of detail, attention to line, and surface movement. As a result, I believe that they evoke a different feel from what a purely representational, realistic rendering would evoke. These animal forms are organic but mechanical, a familiar form manipulated with a focus on craftsmanship to have a mechanical feel. This is also supported by the use of Bronze as the final material.”

Masina has an MFA in Sculpture from Louisiana State University. For many years, welded steel was his primary medium.  More recent sculptures, however, are representational cast bronze.

J. Damiani Gallery is at 237 Warren St., Hudson.
