(HUDSON, N.Y.) – There will be an opening reception for an exhibition of artworks by Hudson-based artist Jen P. Harris at Valley Variety on Saturday, March 8, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. The work in the exhibition, which includes a number of paintings that draw on Tarot iconography to explore conceptions of time, love, sex and mortality, will be on display through June 1, 2014. As a special offering at the opening, guests will have the opportunity to receive insights into their own life with Tarot readings by Jeanne Cameron, who has been reading Tarot for 30 years.

Harris utilizes a combination of poured ink, symbols, primary organic forms, mundane objects and figurative elements to reflect on ideas about the interpenetration of individual and world. The work in the show explores the hypotheses that within every phenomenon lies the potential for its inverse — a closed fist contains an open hand — and that transformation is continuous — the future arrives to illuminate the past. Layered imagery interlocks and overlaps, producing dynamic figure-ground relationships and a meshing of opposites.

Jen Harris was born in Blacksburg, Va., and currently lives and works in Hudson. She received a BA in Studio Art from Yale University and an MFA in Painting from Queens College of the City University of New York. Harris has exhibited her work nationally at venues from New York to Los Angeles. She is the recipient of several prestigious arts fellowships and grants.
