Chamber-Folk Artist Emily Mure to Play Old Train Station

Emily Mure(WEST STOCKBRIDGE, Mass.) – New York City-based singer-songwriter Emily Mure brings her batch of original songs and chamber-folk trio to No. 6 Depot Gallery, in the Old Train Station, on Friday, April 4th, 2014, at 8pm.

Emily Mure is a classically trained oboist turned folk singer-songwriter. Born and bred in New York City, she attended LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts in Manhattan for oboe, competing and performing in reputable venues including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fischer Hall and Alice Tully Hall, all before the age of 17. Mure decided to further pursue music and attended Ithaca College where she studied Oboe Performance and Psychology.  t was here that she discovered Folk and Bluegrass music and decided to learn guitar.  Her grandfather, musician Billy Mure, bought Emily her first guitar. After just one week of playing and a lesson with Ithaca College student and current Howlin’ Brothers’ guitarist Jared Green, she immediately started writing songs.

Emily MureAt Ithaca, Mure also discovered a love for Irish Traditional Music. During the summer before her senior year, she pursued studies in Irish Celtic music at The University of Limerick. Mure fell in love with Ireland and after she graduated, moved to Galway and began her performance career as a songwriter, making her living busking on the streets of Ireland for 6 months.

After immersing herself completely into the Irish culture, Mure returned to her native city of NY with a bag full of songs and in December of 2009, released her first self-produced full-length album, Where I Began. With these songs, Mure started to make a name for herself in NY and New England, sharing the stage with acts like The Duhks, Kris Delmhorst and Kath Bloom.  She was an emerging artist at The Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and performed in venues including The Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton, MA, The Living Room in NYC and Hooker-Dunham Theatre in Brattleboro, Vt.

In 2012, songs from Where I Began were placed on TV networks including ABC and PBS.  Emily made her live TV performance debut on WFMZ Local 69 news’ Music Mondays in Allentown, PA.  And in early 2013, she performed on The Jimmy Lloyd Songwriter Showcase on NBC.  During the summer of 2012, Mure began recording her second full-length album.

“Odyssey” was released last summer. It is a deeply personal album, featuring nine original songs and one cover.  On her version of “Mexico” by the band Cake, she reworks the song for an unlikely trio of acoustic guitar, oboe and cello.  The album highlights Mure’s poetry and her arranging techniques, integrating her classical background and folk style of singing and songwriting.  With the help of award winning musicians of both classical and folk backgrounds, she has composed an album of “unpretentious, straight-and-true songwriting that draws from contemporary folk, acoustic country and intimate chamber pop” (Direct Current Music).  Songs from Odyssey have aired on radio networks including NPR’s The Folk Show on North Country Public Radio and Sirius/XM.
