Soulive Cofounder Alan Evans to Bring Soul-Rock Trio to Helsinki Hudson

Alan Evans(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Alan Evans, the cofounder, writer and drummer of Soulive, will bring Playonbrother, his new “electrified soul-rock trio” to Club Helsinki Hudson on Friday, May 16, 2014, at 9pm. The group – formerly called the Alan Evans Trio – features Beau Sasser on Hammond B-3 organ and Danny Mayer on guitar. With Evans’s hard-driving drumming, the overall sound of Playonbrother updates classic 1970s funk for the 21st century.

Alan Evans has literally been playing drums since the age of two. He was a pioneer in the jam- band world through his early work with seminal funk band Moon Boot Lover. From there, he made his mark as an innovator in the acid-jazz movement as the drummer for one iteration of the Greyboy Allstars, before joining forces with the festival-topping soul-jazz trio Soulive.

Playonbrother boasts the same basic instrumental lineup as Soulive, which is still a going concern. In its heyday, Soulive – which originated in nearby Woodstock in 1999 – opened concerts for the Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band, the Roots, Common, John Mayer, and others. The band also played at various festivals including Monterey Jazz, Newport Jazz and Bonnaroo, and toured throughout Japan and all over Europe.
