Rasputina to Bring Modern Victorian Folk-Rock to Helsinki Hudson

Rasputina(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Singer-songwriter and cellist Melora Creager brings her Modern Victorian folk-rock group, Rasputina, to Club Helsinki Hudson on Thursday, May 22, at 8pm.

Since 1991, Melora Creager – who calls Hudson home — has been exploring the affinities among modern rock, cello, and Victorian folk in original songs that connect the dots between Renaissance madrigals and Nirvana-like grunge-rock. In fact, Creager toured as a cellist with Nirvana on the group’s final European tour.

Originally formed as a female cello-rock trio, Rasputina – which recorded several albums for Columbia Records in the 1990s – has evolved over the years at the same time that hipster musical trends have caught up with Creager’s idiosyncratic creativity that anticipated styles including freak-folk and Steampunk. Creager’s fascination with history and legend has led her to explore medical curiosities, climate change, Auschwitz and 16th-century Catholicism in song.
