Singer-Songwriter Robert Ellis Brings Country-Flavored Folk-Pop to Helsinki Hudson

Robert Ellis(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Nashville-based singer-songwriter Robert Ellis, a Texas native who counts Paul Simon and Randy Newman as creative influences alongside fellow Texans including Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle, brings his original batch of country-flavored pop-rock songs to Club Helsinki Hudson on Sunday, August 17, 2014, at 8pm.

No less an authority on the music of his home state than Texas Monthly magazine has called Robert Ellis “Texas’s next great singer-songwriter.” Among musicians who champion Ellis as a rising star are Americana songwriter Jim Lauderdale, Deer Tick’s Rob Crowell, and Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith, all of whom lent parts to Ellis’s recent, genre-busing album, “The Lights from the Chemical Plant.”

There’s a hint of Willie Nelson’s quavering vocals in Ellis’s voice, as well as a strain of melancholy that recalls George Jones or Tom Waits, especially on his piano ballad, “Bottle of Wine.”
