(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Folk music legends John Sebastian (The Lovin’ Spoonful) and Happy Traum – a session guitarist for Bob Dylan – will be joined by fingerstyle guitarists Kinloch Nelson, Craig D’Andrea and Maycn Taylor performing in a guitars-in-the-round setting at Club Helsinki Hudson on Thursday, October 23, 2014, at 8pm. All five musicians are being featured the following weekend in the Woodstock Invitational Luthiers Showcase: a festival of handmade acoustic guitars and other stringed instruments featuring some of the world’s finest guitars and guitar builders.
John Sebastian and Happy Traum’s careers are the stuff of legend. Sebastian enjoyed a string of Top 10 hits with the pop-rock group the Lovin’ Spoonful, and penned and recorded the memorable theme song to the hit TV show, “Welcome Back, Kotter.” Happy Traum recorded several genre-defining folk albums with his brother Artie; has produced an essential series of instructional books and tapes; and is probably best known as an accompanist for Bob Dylan on several previously unreleased tracks that appeared on “Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits, Vol. II.”
Both musicians have enjoyed career-long friendships and collaborations with a virtual who’s-who of the folk and folk/rock era including Pete Seeger, Woody and Arlo Guthrie, Bill Keith, Mississippi John Hurt, and many others. Traum has written articles for Rolling Stone, Guitar Player, Acoustic Guitar magazines and other publications, and was for three years editor of Sing Out! Magazine. Sebastian performed at the original Woodstock Music and Arts Fair Concert in 1969; Traum at the Newport Folk Festival that same year.
Joining Traum and Sebastian are fingerstyle guitarists Kinloch Nelson, Craig D’Andrea and Maycn Taylor. Nelson’s 45-year career has run the gamut from guitar recitals to club and festival dates with country, rockabilly, and jazz, bands. Nelson’s work has appeared in Acoustic Guitar Magazine, been reviewed in Just Jazz Magazine, and featured in concert on PBS radio and television. He is a regular participant in the Woodstock Invitational Luthiers Showcase and is host of Guitars-In-The-Round.
Craig D’Andrea won the 2007 Canadian Fingerstyle Guitar Championship, signed with Candy Rat Records that year and went on to tour the U.S., Canada, UK, China, and Europe in support of his Candy Rat releases. D’Andrea’s YouTube hits number in the millions.
Macyn Taylor is just 20 years old, with YouTube hits fast approaching one million. She is the 2013 Wilson Center International Guitar Competition champion, recently received the “Most Promising New Talent” award by Acoustic Guitar Magazine, and was named the 2013 WAMI Folk/Celtic performer of the year.
