(CHATHAM, N.Y.) – Contemporary dance-theater ensemble Keigwin + Company performs a program of its state-of-the-art, high-energy movement at PS21 on Friday and Saturday, August 21 and 22, at 8pm. Named the “Cool Kids of Modern Dance” by Dance Magazine, the troupe will dance to music of Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Nicks, Annie Lennox, Aretha Franklin, Roy Orbison, Nina Simone, and Jonathan Pratt.

At PS21, Keigwin + Company will perform five pieces:

Triptych – an essay on architecture that explores concepts of repetition, duration, and pattern. In sleek, minimal black costumes, dancers perform vigorous and precise movement set to the pulsating, percussive beat of Jonathan Pratt’s original score.

Lovesongs – a romantic and playful series of duets that highlight different aspects of love unfolds to classics by Aretha Franklin, Roy Orbison, and Nina Simone.

Straight Duet – Keigwin + Company’s signature piece. It was after meeting and creating it in Larry’s apartment in 2001 that Larry Keigwin and Nicole Wolcott created Keigwin + Company. The original cast will be performing it: Nicole Wolcott and Larry Keigwin.

Contact Sport – inspired by Larry’s family life as a child, playing, roughhousing, and joking with his brothers. This piece explores a range of different relationships between friends, siblings and teammates and features popular music.

Female Portraits – This triptych of solos is set to songs by Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Nicks and Annie Lennox. Each dancer’s costume reflects their different personalities.

Larry Keigwin is a native New Yorker and choreographer who danced his way from the Metropolitan Opera to downtown clubs to Broadway and back. He has created dozens of dances for himself and his dancers, as well as for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, The Martha Graham Dance Company, The Julliard School, and others. Runaway (2008) was proclaimed “a thrilling coup d’theater. His work in musical theater includes the new production of Rent, for which he received the 2011 Joe A. Callaway Award from the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation.

Keigwin is inspired by music from opera to pop songs, and it is music that helps drive the work. His program offers a wide variety of tastes, from new electronic compositions to popular songs. “We would like our audience to go on the journey with us and enjoy themselves,” said Keigwin. “If they walk away feeling entertained great. If they walk away feeling moved by a work or wanting to dance wonderful.”

PS21 audiences will recognize the extraordinary grace of Company member Kyle Hotchkiss, as he is also a member of Take Dance which has performed four times during PS21’s nine-year history. In addition, Kyle is the “poster” dancer on the tenth season brochure.
