(ATHENS, N.Y.) – A program of flamenco music and dance featuring renowned guitarist Maria Zemantauski and dancer La Niña will take place at the Athens Cultural Center on Saturday, May 20, at 7pm, as part of the One World Music Series curated by percussionist Brian Melick, who will also perform.

Maria Zemantauski is one of the world’s few heralded female flamenco-style guitarists, and one of even fewer female flamenco composers. She has performed in Spain, Italy, and across the U.S. to great acclaim. Zemantauski’s programs are a dynamic blend of artistic freedom, innovation, and tradition, highlighting both traditional music and dance forms as well as original compositions inspired by the traditional forms.

“La Niña,” aka Rebeca Byam, a high school Spanish teacher for 33 years, has been teaching flamenco and tap for 11 years. A native of Colombia, she studied flamenco in New York Center with master dancers Jose Molina, Jorge Navarro, and Mariano Parra, and in Spain at the Academia de Flamenco de Mariquilla in Granada.

Concerts start at 7pm, doors open at 6:30, and the suggested donation is $10. The Athens Cultural Center is located at 24 Second Street, Athens.
