Brazilian Girls Bring Multilingual Dance-Rock to Helsinki Hudson

Brazilian Girls

(HUDSON, N.Y.) – They are neither Brazilian nor all girls, but Grammy Award-nominated Brazilian Girls bring their singular, sophisticated, and catchy fusion of electronic dance music and world-beat styles to Club Helsinki Hudson on Sunday, June 25, at 8pm. Brazilian Girls are the descendants of New Wave pioneers like the B-52s, Grace Jones, and the Talking Heads, and sway shoulder-to-shoulder with contemporaries like Grouplove, Reptar, Of Montreal, Rubblebucket, and Moloko.

The ensemble – three guys and one fabulous frontwoman, vocalist Sabina Sciubba – has recorded with David Byrne, Baba Maal and Angélique Kidjo, and has established a reputation as New York’s premier international party band. Compelling rhythms drive their sound but there are always long, curious fingers reaching out to snare interesting accents, beguiling complications, and fresh sounds from the natural and man-made worlds to drive their adventurous yet immediately appealing sound.

The Brazilian Girls make “multicultural, cosmopolitan, intellectual dance music: Ibiza meets punk, dub goes tango, trance gets smart,” according to SPIN magazine. Sciubba cites influences like Caetano Veloso and Feist, and a listener easily hears Bjork in her gorgeous choral vocals, David Bowie in her more soaring melodies, and Soul Coughing in some of the group’s jazzier, funkier numbers.

A reviewer for Billboard magazine wrote, “The New York-based, multicultural Brazilian Girls (singer Sabina Sciubba, keyboardist Didi Gutman, bassist Jesse Murphy and drummer Aaron Johnston) are akin to a modern-day Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band. The rhythmically colorful group thinks nothing of drawing inspiration from a wide range of music, including bossa nova, dub, dance/electronic, jazz, easy listening and German Schlager. From ‘Homme’ and ‘Lazy Lover’ to ‘Don’t Stop’ and ‘Dance Till the Morning Sun,’ the overall vibe is ultra cool and ultra sexy. Throughout, Sciubba’s multilingual delivery remains wickedly sublime.”

Brazilian Girls covered Talking Heads’ “Crosseyed And Painless” for the AIDS benefit album “Silencio=Muerte: Red Hot + Latin Redux,” produced by the Red Hot Organization. In 2009, the band’s “New York City” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronica Album.

Reviewing their 2015 appearance at Helsinki Hudson, I wrote, “Sciubba was in total goddess mode … she has whatever Bjork and Lady Gaga have, and it’s easy to imagine Brazilian Girls headlining a festival like Coachella or Lollapalooza someday soon.
