JAZZ SUPERGROUP PLAYS NUMBER-ONE POP HITS at CLUB HELSINKI HUDSON

(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Omaha Diner, a jazz supergroup featuring guitarist Charlie Hunter, trumpeter Steven Bernstein, saxophonist Skerik and drummer Bobby Previte, will tackle the top of the pop charts, playing jazz versions of number-one pop hits from the 1950s to today, at Club Helsinki Hudson on Thursday, November 7, at 8pm.

NEUMANN FINE ART to FEATURE JOEL GRIFFITH, PAINTER LAUREATE of TIVOLI, in SOLO EXHIBITION

(HILLSDALE, N.Y.) –  Oil paintings by Joel Griffith will be displayed at Neumann Fine Art  (65 Cold Water St) from November 9, 2013, through January 4, 2014. A reception and gallery talk by the artist will take place on Saturday, November 30, at 5pm. Joel Griffith was named the official Painter Laureate of his hometown of Tivoli, N.Y., in 2003. His paintings, many of which grace the walls of Tivoli’s Town Hall, “are like a great story told at the local bar by a profound poet with a visionary eye,” said Bard College associate professor Tim Davis in an essay on Griffith’s work.

Having just released “Wise Up Ghost,” an album he recorded with the Roots, Costello – who is an amazing entertainer and a wonderful solo performer – is expected to play songs from throughout his career.

A Q&A and booksigning will immediately follow the reading, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Hudson Area Library, the New York State Writers Institute, and national literary journal Fence, under the title, The Literary Life Where You Find It: an evening with William Kennedy and Elisa Albert.

Curated by Becca Mann and featuring work by Anna Betbeze, Crystal Z Campbell, Sayre Gomez, Kurt Mangum, Becca Mann, Jessie Rosa Mann, Robbie McDonald, Simone Montemurno, Marlo Pascual, Ben Pruskin, Max Hooper Schneider, Kianja Strobert, and JPW3 / J Patrick Walsh III, the exhibition will be celebrated with an opening reception on Saturday, November 9, from 6 to 10pm. The works in the exhibition vary in form, texture and material, manifesting their presence as glowing aberrations – points of colored light in a decaying industrial field.

(HUDSON, N.Y.) – It’s a weekend of Americana trios at Club Helsinki Hudson, with old-timey trio the Wiyos on Friday, November 8, 2013, at 9pm, followed by Montreal indie-rockers Plants and Animals on Saturday, November 9, at 9pm. the Wiyos play and compose music inspired by the early American musical idioms of the 1920s and ’30s, including blues, country, ragtime, gospel, and swing. With their inventive folk-rock, Plants and Animals could be Canada’s answer to Wilco.

ARTIST JANE DICKSON TO SPEAK AT OMI

(GHENT, N.Y.) – Artist Jane Dickson will give a talk in the Visitors Center Gallery at Omi International Arts Center (1405 Country Route 22) on Sunday, November 10, 2013, at 2pm. Dickson’s current exhibit, Out of Here: Paintings 1999-2013 – five large-scale oil paintings on AstroTurf inspired by her travels in the Hudson Valley – has recently been extended through December 15, 2013.
