Swear and Shake Brings Indie-Folk to Helsinki Hudson

swear and shake(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Brooklyn-based neo-folk outfit Swear and Shake brings its hard-charging indie-folk to Club Helsinki Hudson on Sunday, January 19, at 8pm. The band may remind some listeners of 10,000 Maniacs, another folk-rock group with roots in upstate New York.

The core of Swear and Shake is Kari Spieler (vocals, lyrics, guitar) and Adam McHeffey (vocals, lyrics, guitar, banjo, piano), who met at SUNY Purchase, where they began playing music together. The band formed in 2010 after Spieler helped McHeffey record a demo of one of his original songs, “Johnnie.” McHeffey recruited longtime friends Shaun Savage (bass) and Tom Elefante (former drummer) to flesh out the sounds behind Spieler’s soulful, smoky voice and McHeffey’s catchy folk strumming – imagine Mumford & Sons fronted by June Carter Cash.

In the first few months, favorite tunes like “Johnnie” and “Bones” started to pop up in covers on YouTube.

Swear and Shake most recently has shared stages with the Lumineers, Delta Rae, G Love & Special Sauce, and ZZ Ward. Summer 2013 saw them performing at such festivals as Shaky Knees, Governors Ball, Mountain Jam, and Summer Camp.
