(HUDSON, N.Y.) – English folk-rock singer-songwriter Beth Orton brings her unique, soulful art-folk to Club Helsinki Hudson on Friday, February 7, 2014, at 9pm, for “An Evening with Beth Orton.” The Brit Award-winning artist was a pioneer of “folktronica,” a style mixing elements of folk and electronica, whose pulse still can be felt in the underpinning groove of Orton’s mostly acoustic music.

(OLIVEBRIDGE, N.Y.) – Heather Masse, Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, and Mike and Ruthy headline the second annual Winter Hoot weekend folk festival at the Ashokan Center from Friday, February 7, 2014, through Sunday, February 9. Other performers include Deep Chatham, Rushad Eggleston, the Sweetback Sisters and Connor Kennedy. On-site food and lodging are available. Hoot proceeds raise money for the Ashokan Center’s environmental education program for kids.

(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Gallery owner Carrie Haddad has wild, whimsical and eclectic taste in artworks, and this is always reflected in the shows she hangs at her eponymous Carrie Haddad Gallery. The current exhibition, Modern Artists, featuring contemporary painting and photography and running through March 2, is no exception. I love Carrie’s shows, because she mixes and matches artists of seemingly wildly different temperaments and approaches. The only thing that unifies them is that she likes them, and that’s just fine with me.
