(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Bluesy soul-gospel trio the Holmes Brothers bring their unique stew of Southern funk and Northern blues to Club Helsinki Hudson on Friday, May 2, 2014, at 9pm. Originally from Christchurch, Va., the New York City-based group has shared stages and recordings with Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Willie Nelson, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Merle Haggard, Keith Richards, Al Green, Ben Harper, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Levon Helm, Rosanne Cash, Odetta, and the Jungle Brothers and has gigged all over the world — including performing for President Bill Clinton.

A longtime favorite of Club Helsinki audiences, the award-winning Holmes Brothers – bassist/vocalist Sherman Holmes, guitarist/pianist/vocalist Wendell Holmes, drummer/vocalist and brother-in-spirit Popsy Dixon – take songs from all over the musical map, be they blues, soul, gospel, country, bluegrass, or R&B, and refine them into their unique blend of sweet harmonies and soulful grit. It makes the brothers as adept at covering the Beatles and Blind Willie Johnson as Hank Williams and Nick Lowe. They take it to church one moment and take it to the juke joint the next. And they make it all make sense.

The group’s most recent album, “Brotherhood,” features the Holmes Brothers’ spine-tingling three-part harmony singing, mixing Wendell’s gruff and gravelly vocals with Popsy’s soaring falsetto and Sherman’s rich baritone, bringing the spirit of gospel-inflected deep soul music into every song they perform. Equally gripping is the rhythmic foundation laid down by Sherman’s bass playing and Popsy’s drumming, perfectly complementing Wendell’s blues-soaked guitar solos and church-inspired piano playing. The band expertly blends Saturday night’s roadhouse blues and rock with the gospel passion of Sunday morning’s church service.
