World Party to Bring Immaculate Pop-Rock Songcraft to Helsinki Hudson

World Party (HUDSON, N.Y.) – Grammy Award-nominated British singer-songwriter Karl Wallinger, who performs under the band name World Party, brings his catalog of pop-rock confections to Club Helsinki Hudson on Monday, May 26, 2014, at 8pm. The music of World Party is influenced by and recalls the greats of the rock era, from the Beatles to the Kinks, the Beach Boys, The Band, Neil Young, the Rolling Stones, Dr. John, and Prince.

In London in the late 1970s, Karl Wallinger worked as a clerk for ATV/Northern Songs music publishing company, which fans will no doubt recognize as the Beatles publishing company. After a stint as musical director of the Rocky Horror Show in London’s West End, he joined a funk band called the Out and then the famed Irish folk-rock group the Waterboys.

In 1986, Wallinger and a few others left the Waterboys and formed World Party, and quickly became an international sensation with the Top 40 hit, “Ship of Fools.” By the early 1990s, World Party was headlining festivals, garnering awards (including a nomination for “Best Alternative Music Performance” at the 1990 Grammy Awards), and building a cult following among fans and critics who regarded Wallinger in the tradition of such brilliant British pop-rock craftsmen as Ray Davies and Robyn Hitchcock.

In 2007, World Party released a retrospective called “Best in Show” and toured Australia with Steely Dan. In 2012, the group released “Arkeology,” a five-CD, 70-song set of new songs, demos, outtakes, B-sides, live tracks and radio sessions.
