Seth Rogovoy to Explore Jewish Roots of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen in Multimedia Talks

Seth Rogovoy, the author of “Bob Dylan: Prophet Mystic Poet” and the winner of a Simon Rockower Prize for his groundbreaking article, “Leonard Cohen’s Mystical Midrash,” will explore the profound Jewish roots of these two artists and how they influenced their creative work in online multimedia presentations in late September 2021.

Dorot will present Rogovoy’s “Leonard Cohen’s Mystical Midrash” multimedia program on Friday, September 24, at noon. Seth Rogovoy received the 2016 Simon Rockower Award from the American Jewish Press Association for excellence in arts and criticism for his portrait of musician Leonard Cohen published in Hadassah Magazine in its April/May 2015 issue. “Leonard Cohen’s Mystical Midrash” incorporates still images, video, and close lyrical analysis to explore the deep and profound influence of Leonard Cohen’s Jewish background and scriptural roots in his life and work. The program explores the legendary rock poet’s familiarity with Torah, Talmud, and Kabbalah and how they worked their way into his songs and public utterances. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on and discuss how Cohen can best be seen and appreciated as a Jewish artist.

“Bob Dylan: Prophet Mystic Poet” incorporates still images, video, and close lyrical analysis, to explore the deep and profound influence of the Jewish background and scriptural roots on Bob Dylan’s life and work. The program explores how the Nobel Prize-winning rock poet’s familiarity with Torah, Talmud, and Kabbalah has worked its way into his songs and public utterances, along with his embrace of Israel and the Jewish outreach organization Chabad. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on and discuss how Dylan can best be seen and appreciated as a Jewish artist.
