(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Musical eccentric Brian Dewan and dance-pop artist Stephen Bluhm perform back-to-back sets at Spotty Dog Books & Ale on Friday, November 1, at 8pm. Catskill-based Brian Dewan’s musical repertoire includes an autoharp mounted on a walker, songs about wastepaper basket fires, unlikely distortion pedal usage, and original and salvaged songs all showcasing a demented appreciation for the lesser seen quirks of existence. Stephen Bluhm, of Hudson, writes danceable pop in the vein of Magnetic Fields and Burt Bacharach – lushly wry ruminations on life, love … and dancing. He’s Hudson’s answer to Morrissey.

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.) – Iconic folk-blues legend Taj Mahal headlines an evening of “world blues” at the Mahaiwe on Sunday, November 3, 2013, at 7pm. Also appearing on the bill celebrating American blues music’s global influence are South African guitarist/vocalist Vusi Mahlasela – known simply as “The Voice” in his homeland — and blues-rock group Fredericks Brown, a band featuring Mahal’s daughter, Deva Mahal, who hails from New Zealand.

(HUDSON, N.Y.) – Basilica Hudson is hosting a Halloween night performance event called the Blakk Ballon Ball, featuring YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN — an Asian, Indigenous and Diasporic Art Collective from Canada; Jenny Hval, a multidisciplinary and transgressive artist from Norway whose music overflows with intimate detail and surrealistic bodily imagery, weaving experimental pop with injections of mythology, theory and gender politics; and Tanz Praxis featuring C. Lavender.

(HUDSON, N.Y.) – A new exhibition, Storytellers and Conjurers, featuring works by Kahn & Selesnick, Eileen Murphy, Louise Laplante, Adam Cohen, and Claire Lofrese, goes on display at Carrie Haddad Gallery on Thursday, October 31, 2013, and will remain on view through December 8, 2013. There will be a public reception for the artists on Saturday, November 2, from 6 to 8pm.

SCULPTOR TOM DOYLE in CONVERSATION at OMI
(GHENT, N.Y.) – Sculptor Tom Doyle will be at Omi International Arts Center on Saturday, November 2, 2013, at 3pm for an informal conversation with Bill Maynes, director of The Fields Sculpture Park, where Doyle is currently exhibiting five large-scale works, cast in bronze from original wood forms. The event will take place in the Gallery at the Charles B. Benenson Visitors Center at Omi. Refreshments will be served following the talk.
